Bacon Roses for Valentine's Day

Check out this unique foodie gift

For Christmas, I made my husband a countdown calendar featuring a bunch of odd types of jerky, knowing that he would love it. Guess what? He did! And now I've found something that he and other meat-lovers would love for Valentine's Day, too: Bacon Roses from the Manly Man Company!

These are candies in maple or carmel flavoring featuring rose-shaped bacon on top. They are actually quite pretty, but they would surely make a tasty treat for any bacon-lover this Valentine's Day.

What do you think of these "roses"? Are you getting any foodie treats for yourself or a loved one this Valentine's Day? Share what you're getting in the chat.

Pepper Pot Day

No, not Iron Man's Pepper Potts!

Happy Pepper Pot Day, Hungry Bloggers! Just what is Pepper Pot Day, you might ask? I was wondering the same thing when I read about it. I don't remember learning about it in history, but it's a celebration of a soup that George Washington asked to be made during the Revolutionary War. Apparently it fortified the troops so much they declared it the soup that won the war, even though it was basically a bunch of pepper, pieces of whatever meat the cook could find and tripe.

There is an authentic recipe for Pepper Pot Soup if you want to try it, but I think I'll omit the tripe, thanks! I've never really tried it, so who knows, maybe it's good, but it's just off-putting to me. Do you guys like tripe?

Holiday Cheesecake

How do you serve yours?

A friend of mine brought over a cheesecake today and it was so kind that I had tears. She's one of the sweetest people alive and I want to return the favor! I know she likes cheesecake so I thought I'd make a fun holiday version but I can't decide which one.

This pull-apart one is extra cute with the bonus of being in finger-food sizes already so you don't have to get a fork, but I'm not sure I dig the crust. This festive holiday cheesecake looks almost too beautiful to eat, but would you really eat all that candy? I think I'd want it scraped off. Maybe some green and red swirls in basic cheesecake would be better. These cheesecake squares may combinet the best of both worlds.

Qdoba Candles

Because nothing says holiday like the scent of queso!

Move over, candles that feature scents from Krispy Kreme and Jelly Belly: Qdoba is joining your ranks! Qdoba is selling queso-scented candles for all of the cheese lovers this holiday season. It's bright orange and smells like a combo of American, Monterey and cheddar cheeses, which is what their queso consists of.

Let's be real here, though: the idea behind this is to make us CRAVE that queso! It's basically getting you to buy their marketing in order to buy products later. Don't believe me? Get a Bath and Body marshmallow candle and see if you don't want to smell like marshmallows. Then try not to eat any. Ha! I still love them.

Will you be buying a queso candle?

Review: Shirataki Noodles

They are surprisingly delicious!

Last week I shared a few of the new keto foods that I've been trying lately. Many have been terrible letdowns, but some have been excellent. My husband made me some of those shirataki noodles this week and I was incredibly impressed with them! The cost isn't the best, especially when you're used to paying a buck for spaghetti, but if you're getting pasta that actually tastes like pasta and not crunchy veggies, maybe another couple of dollars isn't so bad.

If you've bought Miracle Noodles before and hated them, I have to ask if you actually prepared them by the instructions. I hear people complain that the noodles are gross and stink all of the time, but that's only true if you fail to rinse them and prepare them as directed. Once you do and add your sauce (we made curry), you can't even tell the difference. They're made from yams and are a fantastic substitute without the carbs and calories.

Have you tried Miracle Noodles? If so, what did you think?

Hangry Pains

What eases yours?

When you're dealing with hanger and the many issues it brings, everything feels so much harder than it is, right? For me, it means getting angry and snipping at everything and everyone, which I know is ridiculous! I'll get really quiet and my husband will guess that I'm hangry because I'm trying not to be a grouch.

So what makes your hanger pains go away in a pinch if you can't eat a meal? For me, the answer is often peanuts, but believe it or not, a coffee is often helpful, too, especially if I can get a little heavy cream in it. Starbucks will sub it for you for sure--and if you don't want too much, tell them half heavy cream, half water. In fact, if you want it keto like me, just ask for no classic and add the sugarfree sweetener of your choice (my favorite is cinnamon dulce).

How about you? What gets you through the hangry munchies when you don't have food readily available?

Review: Thin Slim Foods

A cool company to try if you're keto

For my birthday, I purchased a sample box of keto goodies from Linda's Diet Delites. You can get a great deal at 50% off if you sign up for their newsletter, and it was inexpensive to try these different products in the sample pack.

First of all, any of these items may work for you in a pinch for a craving. Everyone's tastes are different. For me, the best value was the Chocorite candy, which was phenomenal. The Walden Farms syrup wasn't bad on the ThinSlim Bread, which we had as French Toast tonight, and I haven't yet tried the two different noodles, but I have a feeling I will love them both.

The baked goods, however, needed a bit of help. I think blending them into keto shakes or serving with keto ice cream would really improve them, but I wanted to taste them just as they are first. I did not like the lemon donut at all and threw it away. The rest of the items I shared with my family. The snickerdoodle muffin was probably the best of them, but the bottom wasn't as good as the top. I know how hard it is to bake keto treats since I do it myself, and I think these were almost all pretty good for something portable. Most of my keto snacks have to stay refrigerated!

Have you tried any of the brands included in the sampler? If so, which ones do you like best? I think I'll order again and definitely keep experimenting with flavors. Next up: grilled cheese with the bread and curry with the pasta!

DIY Spice Blends

Share yours here!

Do you make your own spice blends to add flavor to your dishes at home? My husband loves to do this so much that he's taken to not purchasing taco seasoning anymore, opting for his own blends instead. To be fair, his blends often employ a few already made blends with his own choices of peppers, but they still end up unique and delicious.

I saw this recipe for chili paste and thought I'd share it as one idea. A lot of people make their own pastes and spices for costs, but others do it for health reasons, omitting ingredients that may not work with their personal dietary needs. I know a lot of people cut salt, for example, or sugar.

Savory Crepes

They're good, too!

I always laugh when I mention how good savory crepes are and people make a face. Sure, crepes are wonderful when they're sweet, and many people prefer them sweet over savory, but that doesn't mean that you can't enjoy both! Savory crepes are a delicious meal to enjoy, too.

For someone like me who doesn't use a lot of sugar, these keto crepes are definitely a welcome option. Mushroom? Cream cheese? I am SO there. Heck, I'll eat thhose without the crepe, but this recipe looks absolutely delicious.

Coconut Curry Recipes

Share yours in the chat

Curry is the best. I can think of a handful of foods that I could eat on the daily and curry is definitely one of them. I like mine spicy, but I'll eat just about any variety, and this keto version of coconut curry is the one I'm into right now. I use ghee in mine, and I love sour cream on top, but I'd love to hear how you make it, too.

I'd also love recipes for other types of curries if you like to make them at home, particularly any meatless versions. I can totally eat my curry on veggies alone, or atop cauli rice, which I think is one of the BEST ways to enjoy cauliflower, but if you have some great curry secrets up your chef's sleeve, by all means, we'd love to hear them.

What types of curry do you enjoy most? How do you make curry at home, and do you have any tricks to make it taste more like restaurant-style curry that you could share with us? Post your recipe links or your own recipes in the chat!
